Cruiser bikes were born out of the Great Depression when the Schwinn Bicycle Company developed a new bike design. Bicycles during that time were seen more as intended for luxury and sports. Schwinn came up with the cruiser bike that was sturdier, more comfortable to ride, and more affordable, features which endeared it to the American public and changed their view of bikes from luxury to necessity. Indeed, it was a necessity in the face of mounting economic difficulties and it remained popular for the next three decades, declined for a while, and experienced a resurgence in the mid-90s which lives on today.
The Huffy Cranbrook 24-Inch Cruiser Bike incorporates all the features that initially made cruiser bikes popular –sturdy, comfortable, and affordable. It does not have all the fancy gears that mountain bikes have, but if you are simply looking for an easy ride to take you to your neighbors or laid-back ride on the beach, the cruiser bike may be for you.
The bike, with its lowered top tube, is designed for teen-aged to adult women. It features a wide padded seat which is fitted with a spring suspension at its rear end for extra comfort. The handlebars are wide and are high enough not to require you to bend over to steer them. The grips on the handlebars as well as the pedals are of the dual density type which minimizes hand and finger fatigue and provides a non-slip surface on the pedals.
Steel fenders cover the 2.125-inch cruiser or balloon tires, thus protecting you from water and mud splatters, and keeping the turquoise blue frame clean. A metal shield protects the upper half of the sprocket and the chain. This keeps your pants from getting caught in them which could result into a spill.
